As Registered Dietitians, we always hear these statements behind closed door:
- “I have tried EVERYTHING and I can’t lose weight.”
- “My body must be the exception, diet and exercise does not work for me.”
I am going to be brutally honest in this post. The statements we hear above are NOT TRUE. I don’t care who you are or what you have tried. The body breaks down and absorbs food that we put into it. It will use the food as energy, if we get TOO much of anything it will be stored as fat. Let’s dig deeper into the 3 reasons why your diets are always failing…
- It’s a fad diet.
- If your diet is restricting a food or food group it will not work. PERIOD. End of story. It will not be sustainable for the rest of your life and you will eventually go back to eating whatever you were restricting and probably even binge on it because you missed it so much.
- If your diet compromises your mental sanity…it will not work. If you have to stay in because you don’t want to go out with friends to be tempted by ‘bad food’…that will not last. Do you want to live under a rock for the rest of your life?
- You don’t keep to the promises you make to yourself.
- Imagine you had a girlfriend who you went out to lunch with once per week. Five minutes before lunch each week she texts you to cancel your outing. By the third or fourth time she cancelled on you, you would probably give up on her. Maybe even think to yourself SCREW HER! She never shows up so why even bother!
- The example above is SO easy to do to ourselves but not even notice we are doing it. Do you PROMISE yourself you will go to the gym and cancel last minute? Promise yourself you will eat breakfast each morning but then run out the door because you didn’t prepare something? If you are breaking your own promises over and over again your brain will start to build distrust towards your own self! Set a realistic promise and KEEP IT! You are worth it!

- CONSISTENCY is key for success, NOT perfection!
- Work on ONE goal at a time. Do it over and over and over again until it becomes a habit. Then move onto your next goal and repeat the process.
- Do NOT work on 20 goals at once and do each goal one time. That will get you nowhere. You are striving for perfection.
