It used to piss me TF off when people would tell me how their friend went through IVF for their first child and then got pregnant naturally the second time around and “that’s totally going to happen to you, too!” 😵‍💫

I’ve found that when you have a child after struggling with infertility, people think that your medical diagnosis of infertility is just 🪄gone🪄

I recognize that people are genuinely *trying* to help by saying something positive, but if someone has not gone through infertility, no matter how much you talk about it or describe it, they will not be able to fully understand your journey.

The best thing that I was able to do was release myself of the expectation that people were going to know what to say.

Here’s the thing ⬇️

I find that fertility treatments, miscarriages, or pregnancy loss are often not talked about because it’s all so hard.

But I often get asked, “How did you stay so positive?” and the short answer is…

I didn’t.

I allowed myself to grieve. I allowed myself to feel all the feelings & emotions.

It’s not about toxic positivity and telling yourself “it’s all going to be okay”

Because (and quoting @bodyimagewithbri here) “unless you’re dead, you’re going to feel uncomfortable feelings.”

And this is where my Intuitive Eating skills really kicked in to center more grace and compassion rather than judging myself for any negative thoughts or emotions.💙

When you make peace with food, there is no urgency to eat past pleasantness.

You have built up trust with your body knowing you have unconditional permission to eat whatever you want, whenever you want.

AND…

You are also honoring your body by stopping eating when you feel pleasantly satisfied.

Does that make you a bad person or a “failure” for eating to discomfort?

Absolutely not. It makes you human.

But as an Intuitive Eater, you are centering how you want to FEEL, physically, mentally, and emotionally, and therefore reducing that urgency to eat to a place of unpleasantness.

Let’s talk about weight stigma in our medical system😤⤵️

First things first: I love this creator (and fellow IVF mama🫶🏼) @jacimariesmith and we as women have enough shit to deal with already during pregnancy.

You have every right to ask for a blind weigh in (OR REFUSE A WEIGH IN ALTOGETHER) and say you do not want to discuss your weight unless it’s somehow going to affect your medical status in this pregnancy.

I can’t tell you the amount of people residing in larger bodies who are told to lose weight DURING their pregnancy. And just so we’re clear … that is NOT sound medical advice❗

When we focus on this *single datapoint* of weight, we are completely missing the opportunity to check in & support these patients. What if we asked about behaviors???

👉🏼How is your physical health during this pregnancy?

👉🏼How is your body feeling?

👉🏼How is your mental and emotional health?

👉🏼Are you fueling yourself properly? Are you getting ENOUGH food throughout the day?

👉🏼Do you feel energized throughout the day? How are your energy levels?

There are SO many ways we can ask questions to our patients that keep them feeling supported & safe instead of causing harm and having them leave the appointment feeling uneasy about their journey.

“Things I can’t believe I’m even having to say…. So here is my question…if the Texas “nutrition coach” turned fundie got in trouble for giving out nutrition advice, why is this okay? Will we see a day where these “coaches” are being held accountable like she is? Anywho….So our gut health is so important. How important? I’m a registered dietitian and if someone came to me with gut issues he or she thought was nutrition related, I would in most cases refer out to a dietitian who specializes in GI. It’s not something to play around with. Not to mention (I’ve got a whole post I went to do on this btw) a lot of what beachbody and many diets for that matter recommend contraindicates gut health. So I’m going on the record and putting my two cents out there…please do NOT take GI advice from someone who is absolutely unequivocally unqualified in this area.”
