Set Healthy Intentions; Not Restrictions!

Merry Christmas Eve! This time of year is full of cheer and happiness, right? Unfortunately, studies are showing the opposite. The Huffington Post published an article about why so many people are now experiencing depression during the holiday season. Here are just a few reasons why ‘holiday cheer’ is now becoming ‘holiday blues’…

    • Unrealistic expectations
    • Comparing to others (especially on social media)
    • Not enough self-care
    • Seasonal effective disorder
    • Daily stressors (family, travel, money, relationships)
    • Trying to do too much

Although depression and anxiety rates may be rising this holiday season, you can make a vow to yourself to shift your perspective this holiday season, especially around food. This time of year, it is easy to want to set unrealistic expectations about trying to lose weight or cut out all sweet treats. DO NOT set yourself up with restrictive goals…think INCLUSION! Here are our dietitians four tips to keep you healthy (and calm) this holiday season!

  1. Fuel your body for the day: no matter what event you have going on that night! Treat every day like a normal day. Wake up each day and FUEL your body with a balanced breakfast regardless of what is being served. The more you restrict your calories during the day for a party at night or dinner event the more your blood sugar will drop and you will have intense cravings.
  2. Food is JUST food: It fuels our body. Whether you are eating a cup of blueberries or a cookie your body is going to break those carbs down and use it for energy. Do not restrict a certain food or food group this holiday reason. You have permission to eat all foods.
  3. Hydrate: Strive on including 100-128 ounces of water each day. The temperature tends to drop during the holiday season which makes us not think about water intake. If you are traveling during the holidays, flying can increase dehydration. Make a vow to focus on your hydration during this holiday season.
  4. Listen to your Hunger and Fullness Cues: All of the delicious holiday beverages and foods are a huge part of the holiday season. You do not need to avoid these like the plague, just be MINDFUL and listen to your hunger and fullness cues!

With 2019 right around the corner, don’t get trapped into thinking you need make New Years Resolutions and change your entire diet. Take it one step, one goal, one intention at a time!
